THE CUBAN REVOLUTION-years of promise

The Cuban Revolution-years of promise is an excellent photographic account of Castro’s takeover of Cuba and of the two years that followed.  The book captures the adventure, the pain and the glory of this historic period with never-seen before photos.  This book may be indispensable for anyone who wants to understand how and what happened.

Wide-range of images providing a still-life look into the past.  The drama of the Cuban revolution comes vividly to life in these never-seen before photos and account of the days during 1958 and 1959 when the rebel forces stormed into the mountains of eastern Cuba, and when Dictator Fulgencio Batista reluctantly yields power to Fidel Castro. Later, when the honey moon is over, members of the aristocracy, followed by Castro’s supporters, shocked and horrified by the firing squads and confiscation of private property, begin to scramble for seats on planes and ships leaving the island.

The photos

The author’s father brought his collection of over 500 photos with him to the United States in 1960.  His father had been a secret supporter of the revolution.  Many of the photos were taken in or near logging camps owned by the author’s father and his brothers.  The Babun brothers also took an active part in the exile anti-Castro movements, including the Bay of Pigs Invasion.  Photos from the later chapters document this period.

Shown are photos during the actual revolution, American visitors to the rebel camps of Cuba, rebel jungle hospitals, burning mills and troops in action; as well as photos of the leading figures of the period, such as Fidel Castro and Che Guevara.  The photos also capture the revolutionaries’ battle for freedom from Fulgencio Batista.

The reader will gain an understanding of the main events that took place in Cuba from 1952 to 1959, their causes and consequences.  Two additional chapters unveil the mass exodus to exile and the failed attempt by the refugees to save Cuba from Communism.

Its large format (10 x 7 Jacket- 160 pages), and number of photographs (124 black & white photos done through a four-color process for greater dimension), the majority taken from his father's personal collection-will qualify The Cuban Revolution-years of promise, as a coffee table book.

Dr. Babun is Managing Partner of Cuba-Caribbean Development Div. of Babun Group Consulting, one of America’s largest providers of strategic services related to a future Cuba, and is also the National Executive Director of ECHO-Cuba, a non-profit effort to facilitate independent human service development to providers and for humanitarian aid in Cuba.
